Summary

This monograph is a collection of country profiles focusing on English as a subject in basic education (ESBE) in eight member states of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The monograph takes a holistic, individual analysis of ESBE in the eight ASEAN nations, covering issues concerning the ideological underpinning of ESBE policies, the relationship between ESBE and multilingualism, challenges in implementing ESBE, issues concerning ESBE teachers and teacher education, and how ESBE relates to ASEAN integration and English varieties. Sections pertinent to country background and sociolinguistic situations as well as education-related statistics are also part of individual country profiles. So are country-specific recommendations for policy and research.
